Plasma, often called the fourth state of matter, is an ionized gas containing roughly equal numbers of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. This ionization occurs when sufficient energy is applied to a gas, such as when it interacts with the atmosphere. In plasma skin treatments, when the device is held at the appropriate distance from the skin, this energy ionizes the surrounding air, primarily oxygen and nitrogen, creating a small-scale electrical arc, resembling a tiny lightning bolt.
When the plasma arc contacts the skin, it instantly vaporizes superficial skin cells through a process called sublimation. This controlled vaporization causes the surrounding skin to contract, resulting in immediate tightening and a lifting effect.
